Helena Resident Bio: Harriett Dallas
Interview conducted June 20, 1910, by Emily Clementine
(Harriett Dallas is the on again/off again girlfriend of Simon Hastings, Sarah's beloved.)
1. Name:
Harriett Chastain Dallas
2. Date of Birth: May 2, 1890.
3. Place of Birth: Quincy, Montana, born and raised.
"Oh my goodness! You live only 7 miles from me?"
Small world.
"My dentist is in Quincy!"
That's my Uncle Lloyd.
4. Parents: Feston and Daisy Dallas
5. Siblings: None, officially.
6. Describe your childhood. My father was a Presbyterian minister. Mother kept the home and helped to run an orphanage. I grew up with a dozen or so unofficial brothers and sisters.
7. What did you enjoy doing as a child?
Playing games with the girls who were my age. We'd pretend we were princesses and put on little plays for my parents. That was my first taste of acting. It's now my major at Jennings.
8. What is your earliest memory? Playing an angel in a Christmas pageant at church. I still have the little wings preserved in a box. I hope to use them for my own daughter someday.
9. How old were you when you went on your first date and where did you go? 13. One of the older boys escorted me to a church picnic. When he kissed me, I ended up with blueberry smeared all over my face. I tried explaining to my mother that even though I was allergic to blueberries I still wanted the experience of eating them so as to not let Miss Kildare feel out of place by me not eating a piece of her blueberry pie.
My mother was so touched by my sincerity and effort to tell such a weak lie that she laughed and let me and him off the hook.
10. Married? "Am I to interpret your growl and waving finger on your left hand as a sign that you aren't married yet?"
Brilliant detective work, Miss Holmes.
11. Pets?
I found some abandoned kittens once when I was a little girl. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. I raised them and threw a horrendous temper tantrum when daddy put them in a box and gave them away in Plentywood.
12. Education:
Quincy High School: class of 1907. Jennings, hopefully, class of 1911. Major: Drama.
13. Current friends:
Destiny Erickson is my best-friend. We've been roommates since freshmen year. Simon Hastings is a dear friend as well as my on again/off again boyfriend. He drives me bananas but I love him so.
14. Occupation: Full time student. Me and another friend of mine, Judy Racicot, volunteer at a local home for wayward girls. We teach them to use drama and other arts to express themselves.
15. What was your first job? Cleaning the church building.
16. How much did you make? A nickel every Sunday, which I was supposed to put back into the poor box, but, well, on hot days, ice cream is just too much of a temptation.
17. What did you like to do in your free time? Spend time with Simon. He can be an amazingly romantic cad at times.
"Seriously?"
"Don't even think about it, Emily Jean Clementine!" -SC
18. What are you doing now? Studying for an exam in Geology, a scientific process whose importance to my life will surely last for decades.
20. Do you admire a famous person? Annie Oakley
21. What makes them admirable? She is a genuinely sound and deep individual. She's performed for American presidents and European royalty but you wouldn't know it by her gentle spirit.
Last year, she came to Helena and performed her play "The Western Girl." Her mobility at times was limited because she is suffering from the affects of a train accident in 1901, but she gave a stirring performance nonetheless. As the show was being broken down to get ready to move on to Billings, she took time to visit with all of the people who worked in the production from lighting to ticket-taker, my job. Before she stepped into her automobile, she tossed me a pack of cards.
"Pull out the King of Hearts and hold it high above your head."
I was a little nervous, but I followed her instructions. She then told the driver to start driving. As they sputtered down the road, she leaned out the car and fired a pistol taking out the king's crown. Everyone clapped. The car turned around, she drove back to me and said, "If you trust yourself, sweetie, you can't miss."
22. What is your favorite food? Popcorn
23. What is your favorite color? Mauve.
24. What is your favorite song? Neither Do I Condemn Thee by Daniel Webster Whittle
25. Hobbies: I like to sing soprano in the Fanning Girls Glee Club.
26. Name of the last book you read?
Do you promise not to tell anyone?
"Romero The Pirate: A Tale of Forbidden Passions by Edith Browling."
Yeah, how'd you know?
"My dear, you have that certain smile. Remember? Chapter 4?"
Oh my goodness! I can't believe you know about that book. It's been passed around Fanning Hall so many times the cover fell off.
"Really? What was your favorite part?"
The tsunami.
"'Have you ever considered the possibility that such tumult can be a well-spring to an uncharted realm of tender delights?'"
Ahhhh! Oh my goodness! And that's the first time we see the cobra tattoo on his chest, no, wait, or was that chapter five? Come on, Tammy Buckman up on the third floor has it now, let's go.
27. Tell me about a memorable moment in your life; a time you will never forget. My first day at Jennings.
28. What things do you find yourself doing that you said you'd never do? Arguing with my parents.
I believe they were sincere when they raised me in the Presbyterian church but now I see that they understanding of religion was in error. I used to look forward to going back to Quincy, but nowadays, I dread it.
29. What are the goals you are still working toward?
Believing that success can occur beyond my efforts to control the situation.
30. When people look back at your life, how do you want to be remembered? Honest and enlightened.
31. What is your favorite outdoor activity?
Picnics at Lake Helena with Simon. Just us, a checker board blanket, fried chicken and a canteen of lemonade. I am so in love with that man.
32. Do you attend church or religious services? I attend and I love it! Up until August 28th, 1908, "Amazing Grace" was just a hymn. Simon, Glenda, Marcie, Anna Sorrento and others showed me that day "Amazing Grace" is a guarantee.
33. What is your favorite Bible verse?
I'll quote it for you. Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
34. What makes you happy? Finding tired freshman girls crying in the rain and helping them.
35. What makes you sad? The disbelief of some can be an unwarranted obstacle to the faithful.
36. What frightens you? The possibility of not being good enough to be Simon's wife.
37. What is there about you that would surprise people if they found out?
When I was a little girl I wanted a pet ferret. Mother would not hear of it so I caught one on my own and placed it in a little cage. I tried to feed it a carrot and it bit me. I showed mommy my 'owiee" and she took me to the doctor who politely informed me that ferrets are not native to Montana.
My dear pet "Pumpkin" was a large rat. I had to get rabies shots. Pumpkin went to rodent heaven.
