Eagle Creek Resident Bio: Linda Gentry

Interview conducted Saturday, October 29, 1910, by Sarah Conrad

(Linda Gentry is a runaway from Havre)

1. Name: Linda Kylia Gentry (it should have been Stafford)

2. Date of Birth: April 1, 1897

3. Place of Birth: Havre, Montana

4. Parents: Cory and Louisa Gentry

5. Siblings: Billy Joe (1888-), Mavis Louisa (1890-), Henry Hawk (1895-)

6. Describe your childhood. I grew up in Havre on a black-eyed pea farm.

7. What did you enjoy doing as a child? I enjoyed playing with my best friend Kerry. We made an entire town made out of dried apple dolls.

8. What is your earliest memory? Playing in the snow with my brother Bobby Joe.

9. How old were you when you went on your first date and where did you go? 13. I went over to my sister's house to give her a lunch my mother had made for her. She had been sick in bed for a month. She was about to give birth and the doctor said she should stay in bed.

I delivered the lunch and spent time talking to Mavis. She and Artie had just had an argument. When Mavis was through eating, she wanted to go to sleep.

I took the dirty dishes into the kitchen and cleaned them. While I was washing them, I began talking to Artie.

I had known Artie for two years but I never thought he was so handsome until that day. He was my teacher in fifth and sixth grade, so I only saw him as a grown up, not as a man. When the dishes were finished we went for a walk.

We only talked on the first date. But, the next day, I went back and this time, I didn't have a lunch. I just wanted to spend time with Artie. He made me feel pretty and special.

10. Married? Not really.

11. Pets? I have a hound dog named Blue.

12. Education: I was in seventh grade at Havre School until I ran away, so, I'm not sure what happens next with my education. The school might not want me back because I am pregnant.

13. Current friends: Kerry Gardner, Coleen Mills, Sarah Brightman. I hope Artie and I can still be friends when this is all over. My sister Mavis never wants to speak to me ever again.

14. Occupation: Being a mother, soon.

15. What was your first job? I've never had a paying job. I worked on the farm because I had to.

16. How much did you make?

17. What is your favorite quote? She knows not what the curse may be,
And so she weaveth steadily,
And little other care hath she,
The Lady of Shalott.

-Alfred Lord Tennyson

18. What are you doing now? Talking to your mom. She's been very, very nice to me. Unlike my mother, Mrs. Conrad wants to listen to me.

When I told my mom that I had feelings for Artie she said it was just a school-girl crush and I should ignore it. I wish she'd listen a little closer.

20. Do you admire a famous person? Uncle Will is the Mayor of Havre, I suppose he's famous.

21. What makes them admirable? Uncle Will is always trying to help people around town. Last year, he helped organize a fundraiser to buy new school books.

22. What is your favorite food? Pancakes. Your mom made them this morning and she said we can have them tomorrow too.

23. What is your favorite color? Violet

24. What is your favorite song? From the Land of the Sky-Blue Water by Nelle Richmond Eberhart

25. Hobbies: I still like making dried apple dolls.

26. Name of the last book you read? The Adventures of Buffalo Bill Cody by Col. William F. Cody. Artie read that in class to us last year. He really made the book exciting.

27. Tell me about a memorable moment in your life; a time you will never forget. Jumping on the train in Havre was exciting.

28. What things do you find yourself doing that you said you'd never do? Carrying a loaded pistol in my purse. Artie promised he would never shoot anyone, he just wanted the gun to scare a robber.

29. What are the goals you are still working toward? I'd like to make amends. I'd like to get over Artie and fall in love with a boy my own age, preferably one who isn't already married.

30. When people look back at your life, how do you want to be remembered? I want to be a millionaire when I grow up so I can help poor people.

31. What is your favorite outdoor activity? I like fishing in the Milk River, it runs through Havre. My dad and I go fishing sometimes early in the morning. He always baits the hook for me because I feel sorry for the worms.

32. Do you attend church or religious services? We never attended church. My dad says that being a good person is better than religion.

33. What is your favorite Bible verse? Romans 12:12-15. Your mom taught me that verse.

34. What makes you happy? Hearing actual talk about emotions. My mother told me nothing. When I was in sixth grade, the school had a nun come over one day and talk to us girls. The boys were given an extra hour of recess.

The nun talked about reproduction in vague terms. She said we needed to pray when we thought about boys. I don't remember the rest of the lecture because I thought it was dumb. If there was a God and he made me then he gave me all of these feelings and desires for a reason and they can't be all bad.

35. What makes you sad? Knowing that I am going to get fat, give birth and, most likely, give up my baby.

36. What frightens you? I am still not sure what happens to pregnant ladies. I don't want to get real sick like my sister.

37. What is there about you that would surprise people if they found out? I can put my fist in my mouth.
