That was a big event because Plentywood was the only place nearby which had a dance floor. We climbed in the back of a wagon with the rest of her family. Last I heard, she was living over in Pike, South Dakota.

30. Tell me about a memorable moment in your life; a time you will never forget. The day Mayor Tallard suggested the swimming hole be turned into a city park.

The town didn't have any parks. Mayor Tallard, who’d been in office just a couple of years, had enough vision to see that this community needed to expand its cultural opportunities.

Me and a couple of other fellows worked on it for most of a year. We cleared rocks, built steps, outhouses and a changing room. Only after the work was complete did folks recognize the value in the project.

When you young people go swimming down there you probably never would have imagined that it was mostly the result of engineering. Instead, you would think of it as a natural formation which is fine by me. I am not seeking credit; I am relating this story because it needs to be recorded.

31. What things do you find yourself doing that you said you'd never do? Wishing for younger days. That drove me crazy as a child but now I do it myself.

32. What are the goals you are still working toward? I'd like to write my memoirs someday. I don't know if anyone except my grandkids would read it but that would be enough.

33. When people look back at your life, how do you want to be remembered? As a man devoted to his family and betterment of his community.

34. What is your favorite outdoor activity? Trout Fishing

35. Do you attend church or religious services? I am a deacon at Eagle Creek Baptist. I sing in the choir.

37. What makes you happy? Seeing folks straightening their life out.

38. What makes you sad? Prejudice of any kind

39. What frightens you? Earthquakes

40. What is there about you that would surprise people if they found out? I actually considered running against Rafe in the last election. Not that he wasn't a good man; I just pondered my place in the town. If I'd run and won, I'd be the only black mayor in Montana, maybe the first.
